S RELATED TO THE ESTATE OF JOHN ROSE OF SOUTH DENNIS: On 29 May 2010, Edmond Rhodes Nickerson shared a stack of papers he had from his collection concerning the estate of John Rose, the first Portuguese resident of South Dennis. The papers were delivered to the transcriber (Burton N. Derick), who digitized all of the papers, placed them in temporal order, and put the originals into archival sleeves for return to Mr. Nickerson. The death of John Rose, a native of Fayal, is not recorded in the vital records of Dennis. His will, written on 3 Feb 1866, tells that he is in feeble health. His gravestone, in South Dennis Congregational Cemetery, Lot 222, states “John Rose died Feb. 6, 1866 aged 42 years – a native of Fayal.” The cause of his death is not known, but it was likely from consumption.en_US
