Colonial Gas Station
Description
"Colonial Gas Station." This gas station stood near the corner of Old Main Street and Trotting Park Foad, diagonally across from "Jericho House" (formerly the 1801 Captain Theophilus Baker Homestead) and directly opposite the 1867 Captain Elnathan Kelley Homestead. The station itself stood at what is today an unimproved parcel of land known and numbered as 85 Old Main Street. A cement base for one of the old gas pumps still remains in the ground today, just above grade level, near a telephone pole. The locus can also be described as being between 71 Old Main Street (the Dr. Jonathan P. Edwards, Jr. homestead) and 95-97 Old Main Street (the William Baker Homestead). The gas station operation was discontinued and the structure was moved to a location just around the corner, at 702 Route 28, as a part of the Buccaneer Way development. Its lines remain the same today (2001). In the 1990's it was the location of a "Del's Lemonade" and hot dog stand, and a breakfast restaurant. 'Ihe exceedingly rare photo image came from the collection of Francis (Frank) Baker of 66 Old Main Street, West Dennis, through the efforts of Michael Donovan of 71 Old Main Street, West Dennis and Michael E. Chilinski of 506 Main Street, South Dennis. Frank Baker photo/Edmond Rhodes Nickerson negativeArtifacts
